10 years after blu and exile released their magnum opus below the heavens, the california duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. in the beginning: before the heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. their third collaboration follows 2012s give me my flowers while i can still smell them, and is slated for an october release. in the beginning: before the heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of blu and exile’s creativity at the time. the album has guest appearances from familiar names like dr. oop, donel smokes, aloe blacc, and blame one. while soul provider, another day, and party of two appeared on blus lifted ep, the majority of these songs showcase blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (constellations), getting radio play (on the radio), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (youre gonna die someday). exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and dj scratches.

the best r&b songwriter and soul singer that most people have never heard of, sam dees has written songs for countless artists, including gladys knight, aretha franklin, whitney houston, george benson, the temptations, teddy pendergrass, millie jackson, jackie wilson, the manhattans, regina belle, kc & the sunshine band, willie clayton, and many others. he’s also a pretty fine singer, having recorded for the chess, atlantic, polydor, and sss labels, and he had a nice string of his own hits in the 1970s.
his 1975 atlantic album “the show must go on” has long been regarded by southern soul aficionados as one of the best of the genre. sounding a bit like a deeper-voiced curtis mayfield (in both style and theme), dees sings with assurance, wisdom, passion, and a whole lot of soul here. songs like “child of the streets”, “troubled child”, & “what’s it gonna be”, share mayfield’s commitment to social commentary, and dees knows his way around a love song, too.

7th storey projects is pleased to welcome back the myor massiv head honcho for his 3rd release on our label. earlier this year, coco bryce travelled to tokyo and osaka for a small series of gigs. thoroughly impressed by his experiences there, upon returning home, he immediately took to crafting a slew of jungle and hip hop tracks, heavily influenced by everything he d seen, heard, felt and tasted in the land of the rising sun. the ep kicks off with its title track, ayakashi. dark, fierce and mysterious like the mythical creatures it was named after, it builds up slowly, utilizing a combination of chopped up japanese percussion, haunting flutes and hot pants breaks, before switching to full on amen assault mode halfway through the tune. shinjuku is one of tokyos most well known wards, and also the place where coco found the records from which the samples were sourced to construct this number: a turntablism beat/scratch album, and a compilation of traditional work songs, this particular one originating from the gold mines of the island of hokkaido. on the b1 track, kaguya, he takes a more gentle approach: sweet, yet melancholic, like the miyazaki movie of the same name. the ep is rounded off with hotaru, which borrows from an entirely different source of inspiration, namely dj krush s abstract take on boom bap hip hop. shards of mid-90s mo wax are blended with anime samples, making for a solid two and a half minutes of golden era-esque head nodding.

groove patrol aka the 95 north crew dropped these 2 sides of heavyweight nyc garage pressure in 1993. one listen and it’s obvious the influence records like this had on uk producers and scenes. swinging, funked out and tough, all at the same time, need your love is here across 3 mixes. the original mix itself sounding the most uk-centric for sure. if soulful, underground us house is your bag you’ll be needing this reissue for sure! absolutely oozing class, classic material. dancin’ to the music is the b-side, 2 mixes feature, again and it’s that 95 north sound - drenched in soul, yet street at the same time. both versions are hard enough for the heads, but musical enough for the dancers who are deep in the speaker stack. brilliant stuff for house lovers old and new. this one’s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all cuts, unedited, as per the original release way back when. essential stuff here. do not sleep. a worthy addition to any dj’s bag.

tr one return with 4 very different tracks recorded in one take at their studio in the irish southeast. a month has passed uses a dubbed out aesthetic merging influences from uk bass and detroit using shimmering melodic progression. the boutique of never ending dreams works towards a synth laden dreamlike peak. the printer duly merges playful chicago drums with an organic chord structure to create a head nodding funk. finishing the ep is road to the sea , a pensive sway of dubby sonics masked in a fog of reverb. tr one are an established name in the irish electronic music community and are known for their energetic and engaging performances as djs. they have received critical acclaim for the raw soulful productions from their studio in hometown carlow, ireland. they have gained respect for their ability to deftly move between the lines of genres with a strong sense of adventure and connection with detroit/chicago/dublin machine soul. from this they have released music on lunar disko, apartment and fine art recordings, with the strains of the us midwest never far from sonic influence. they have worked in a range of styles from old movie soundtrack disco with new jackson to punishing techno sharing wax space with the phantom planet outlaws.
